Try, Try Again

Here are some sketches for a project I'm working on. It's not my story, nor am I the first artist to work on it, so I'm having to do quite a bit of experimentation to find a look that feels right to me while remaining faithful to what has been done and designed. What look do you like best?

I penciled and colored the page with the car chase, and the superlatively talented Jared Greenleaf was kind enough to drop some inks on it for me. Also worth mentioning: my wife gathered most of the research on those cars, excepting the Corvette. She's a big help pretty much all of the time.

The premise for this thing is really cool, and I'm pretty excited to be attached to it. More on this project as it unfolds.

P.S.-- Some of y'all asked about when the rest of that Jean-David story will be available. The truth is that I don't know. I'm waiting to hear back on a few different fronts, and I'll let y'all know what's what as soon as I can. Thanks for expressing your interest!

Jake, I really like all these... but knowing what the writer said about the first inked page, I'd say that the style of the first two top drawings is a pretty good direction. It's sort of in-between the inks and the straight pastels. Oh, and I really dig it.

By the way the profile pastel drawing of the woman is sooooooo nice!

Awesome! It is very exciting to see you doing comics professionally! I agree with Scott: the girl looks good. And I like the top two images. I think the colored page is solid but I would prefer to see a more unconventional comics style like the top two or the bottom two images.

Jake, in my non-artist mind...I am going to try and give my two sense to you. But know that what I say isn't set in blood, but more said with love. Okay...
I like the color of the first guy, the green really stands out to me, and I LOVE LOVE the cars. I think Kat found you some great cars, and you gave them great character. And I really like the woman, she is really clean looking. That is it.

Like the car chase

Love how the car chase turned out! And the pastels are always nice. I like the first two... but they don't seem quite as readable. Not sure how that translates to comics.

But cool! Can't wait to see how it turns out!

Good grief, this is all so freaking COOL. I especially love the pastel drawings. I wish I knew how to use color like you.

That top one feels very different from most comics - I LOVE the imprecise, thick pencil work. It's almost painterly , how it suggests form.

And the one inked by Greenleaf is classic comic clear to read.

PLEASE keep the flat prints on all the clothes.

I might be a sucker for faces, but I'd say that the pastel tahitian girl is what I'm liking the best. I envy those angles you're creating.

I wish the writer would say "Jake, you decide what style you want to do - just keep it consistent." If that were the case, what would YOU do? (and don't say the 'easiest style', what would you like to represent you, I'm sincerely curious:)
